Date Night Makeup

Judging by social media the majority of the population is getting their Valentines Day on, seems like the perfect time for a date night makeup. Lets be honest you can slap whatever you want on your face for date night or any other night, there's really no rules but for me I always think soft and neutral. As I write this I'm staring at my brows that have ended up heavier than usual and I'm feeling a little hypercritical when I said "soft", oops.

I'm sure I've mentioned many times on this blog that I'm a total matte fiend when it comes to eyeshadows. That's still true but I have been pushing myself a little out of my comfort zone of late. The shimmery tones that were once exclusively reserved for weddings and the like are now making the odd appearance at other occasions.

Shimmery eyeshadows can be difficult to wear the older you get, it emphasises every sag, every pore, and my eyes are quite bad for that but for eyes like mine I think we just need to be careful about placement. For example I make sure to extend my crease by shading above a little especially towards the outer corner to hide my hooded eyelids ever so slightly.

As I said before, I like soft neutral shades for date night so I've used a combination of four MAC eyeshadows plus mascara but no eyeliner on top or bottom. If I were to add an eyeliner I'd go for a taupe or nude just on the waterline but save my liquid liner for another day.

I usually ALWAYS wear blush but I opted for just a little bronzer and highlighter instead then a quick lick of pink on my lips in an attempt to add a little colour without going too heavy, but then there's my eyebrows again, who can miss them. I think a subtle peachy pink cream blush would be lovely with this look as an alternative, keeping it light and fresh.

This is everything I used on my face for this look so lets have a quick rundown:
Skin: Rimmel Lasting Finish Breathable Foundation in Light Porcelain,
Bobbi Brown Corrector in Porcelain Bisque,  Anastasia Beverly Hills Bronzer in Tawny,
Fenty Beauty Highlighter in Girl Next Door
Eyes: MAC Eyeshadows in shades Antiqued, Mulch, All That Glitters and Blanc Type , Glossier Lash Slick
Brows: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade in Ash Brown, NYX Eyebrow Gel in Espresso
Lips: YSL Glossy Stain in Pink Coral

One thing I do find with shimmer is that they have a tendency to be so rich and velvety. Not saying that matte's don't but they can be more hit and miss even within brands and sometimes palettes. Just in case anyone happens to be interested on how I worked with each eyeshadow shade I used 1 on the outer half, taking it underneath and a little through the crease towards the inner corner. I added 2 into the crease and very outer corner then 3 went all over the lid and a little under the eye as well. 4 was only used after I'd blended out, over the brow bone. I hope that makes sense, I find it so hard to explain without showing.

I'd love to say I was heading out tonight to show off my look but truth is I'm gonna scrape off these brows and watch Dirty John in bed. How are you spending your Thursday night? Valentines or otherwise.
